Quick Facts: James Allan Mollison, MBE, was an legendary Scottish revolutionary aviator who set many records during the rapid growth of aviation in the 1930s, flying solo or with his wife, Amy Johnson. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, on April 19, 1905, he was the only child of a consultant engineer, Hector Alexander Mollison, and Thomasina Macnee Addie. From a young age, Mollison showed a deep fascination with flying, a passion that would shape his life. He received his education from The Glasgow Academy and the Edinburgh Academy. At the age of 18, he obtained his Royal Air Force (RAF) Short Service Commission, becoming the youngest officer in the service. After completing his training, he was posted to India, where he flew into active service in Waziristan. James became a flying instructor at the Central Flying School (CFS) at the age of 22, again setting the record for being the youngest in this role. Briefly after, he was transferred to the RAF Reserve and dedicated his time to civil aviation. From 1928 to 1929, James was an instructor in Adelaide, with the South Australian Aero Club. He later left that position and became a pilot with Eyre Peninsular Airways and Australian National Airways. While becoming a household name, James took a record-breaking approach to making his name. In July and August 1931, he set a record for the fastest flight from Australia to England (8 days, 19 hours), and in March 1932, he set a record for the fastest flight from England to Cape Town, South Africa (4 days, 17 hours). James also flew commercially for Charles Kingsford Smith\'s ill-fated Australian National Airways.
James\' last major record attempt came in November 1936 on a flight from Croydon to Cape Town, South Africa. He flew with a co-pilot, Édouard Corniglion-Molinier, a French aviator, with the attempt ending with a forced landing some 160 km short of Cape Town. James and Johnson served in the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) during the Second World War. Unfortunately, Johnson was killed while ferrying an aircraft in 1941. In June 1941, James and an ATA crew handed Cunliffe-Owen OA-1 G-AFMB to Fort Lamy, Chad. James, for his services with the ATA, was created as a member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE.
