Quick Facts: Elliot Ness was a renowned and popular American Prohibition agent known for his works to bring down Al Capone while enforcing Prohibition in Chicago. He led a team of law enforcement agents nicknamed The Untouchables, handpicked for their incorruptibility. Months after his death, the release of his memoir, The Untouchables, launched several screen portrayals, establishing posthumous fame for Ness as an incorruptible crime fighter. Starting from the top, Eliot Ness, the youngest child of five children of Peter Ness (1850–1931) and Emma King (1863–1937), was welcomed into the world on April 19, 1903, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. According to his birthday, he was accepted under the Aries astrological sign. Eliot received his education from Christian Fenger High School in Chicago and the University of Chicago, where he graduated in 1925 with a degree in political science and business administration. During his university years, he was among the members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Elliot\'s career took a significant turn when he joined the Retail Credit Company of Atlanta as an investigator for the Chicago territory. It was during this time that he conducted background investigations for credit information. His journey led him back to the University of Chicago in 1929, where he pursued a graduate course in criminology taught by the renowned August Vollmer, a police reformer and chief of the Berkeley Police Department. This experience profoundly influenced Elliot, shaping his ideas about professionalising law enforcement. Eliot joined the U.S. Treasury Department in 1926. He worked with the 1,000-strong Bureau of Prohibition in Chicago after being influenced by Alexander Jamie, an agent of the Bureau of Investigation, who was his brother-in-law. In March 1930, attorney Frank J. Loesch of the Chicago Crime Commission appealed to President Herbert Hoover to take down Al Capone. Seeking a swift resolution, Attorney General William D. Mitchell implemented a plan devised by President Hoover. George E.Q. Johnson, U.S. Attorney, the Chicago prosecutor directly in charge of Capone\'s Prohibition and income tax investigations, handpicked the 27-year-old Eliot to lead this crucial squad. With the corruption of Chicago\'s law enforcement agents endemic, Eliot formed a reliable team, later known as the Untouchables, after reviewing the records of all Prohibition agents. In 1931, Eliot and his team rejected a bribe from a member of Al Capone. On October 17, 1931, Al Capone was convicted on 3 of 22 counts of tax evasion and sentenced to 11 years in prison after a failed appeal. Eliot was approaching the federal agents who transferred Capone from the Cook County Jail to Dearborn Station, where he took the Dixie Flyer to the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary. For his good work, Eliot was elevated to Chief Investigator of the Prohibition Bureau for Chicago. In 1933, he was tasked with being an alcohol tax agent in the Moonshine Mountains of southern Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. He was transferred to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1934. On May 16, 1957, Eliot Ness collapsed and died of a heart attack in his home in Coudersport, Pennsylvania, aged 54.
